Description
The Quaternary Knot, also known as the Fourfold Knot, is a form of Celtic knotwork built around four symmetrical points connected by an unbroken, interlacing line. In Celtic symbolism, fourfold designs are commonly associated with the four elements, earth, air, fire, and water, as well as the four directions, north, south, east, and west. Together, these associations reflect balance, structure, and stability within change.
Like other Celtic knots, the continuous line represents eternity, interconnectedness, and the cyclical nature of life. The Fourfold Knot emphasizes wholeness created through balance, rather than the dominance of any single force. Historically, fourfold symbols were used to represent harmony between forces and the importance of maintaining equilibrium.
The Fourfold Knot invites balance across different areas of life. Its symmetry reflects the idea that stability does not come from stillness, but from alignment between movement, structure, and flow. Strength is found not in excess, but in harmony, when no single element overwhelms the others.
This symbolizes grounding, protection, and the quiet confidence that comes from being centered within yourself, even as life continues to move around you.
Each pair of Sunshine on Tap earrings is thoughtfully cut, and assembled by hand on site.
For those who love natural, unpainted wood, earrings are available in Finished Baltic Birch or Finished Cedar, allowing the unique grain and tone of each wood to shine. Baltic birch offers a lighter, clean look, while cedar brings deeper, earthier hues.
Our colorful designs are hand-painted on Baltic birch, using the wood as a natural canvas. Each piece is painted by hand, so subtle variations in color and brushwork ensure no two pairs are ever exactly the same.
During the laser-cutting process, the wood naturally develops a soft, singed edge. Rather than removing this entirely, we intentionally leave hints of it in place. This gentle darkening adds contrast, depth, and character, an organic reminder of the process and the hands behind each piece.
Each pair is finished with stainless steel earring hooks and a complementary bead, chosen to suit the finish you pick. If you’d rather have them on their own, select No Bead.
Custom colors: These are made to order, so both the paint colors and the bead color can be matched to whatever you have in mind. List the colors you’d like in the order notes field at the bottom of the checkout page, and we’ll create your pair to match.
Because every step is done by hand, from cutting to painting to final assembly, small variations are part of the magic.
Every purchase supports Sunshine on Tap, a nonprofit dedicated to helping people reconnect with joy, wonder, and the quiet magic woven into everyday life. When you wear these earrings, you’re not just wearing art, you’re supporting a mission rooted in creativity, kindness, and community.
